An oasis in the white sands, red earth and thick bush, Cape Leveque can be accessed by self-drive 4WD (some four hours) or by air. A large 4WD is strongly recommended when travelling this area; sandy sections and corrugations require great care. The roads may be closed during the ‘wet’ season (late Sept to late May).
Beagle BayFrench Palatine monks established an Aboriginal mission near Beagle Bay, north of Broome, in 1890. A pretty church still remains; a building constructed by the monks using hand-made bricks. The altar inside is beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl and other shells from local waters. Day visitors are welcome but permission is required to enter the lands around Beagle Bay. The Dampier Peninsula is home to the people of the Jawi, Bardi, Nyulnyul, Jabirrjabirr, Nimanburru and Ngumbarl language groups.
